Jazz Band
Jazz Band tryouts for 2026-27 will be held after school on April 22nd. If you can't make this date, please email Mr. Crookston at a [email protected] to make other arrangements.
If an in-person audition doesn't work, a video recording may suffice with approval.
Except in very rare cases, students are expected to be in a core band class to participate in the jazz band. Clarinets are accepted in the jazz band, and they will double the Tenor Sax parts or sometimes trumpet parts. However, in adjudicated festivals where "doubling" is not allowed, they will only play parts if it is written for a clarinet.
In addition to the etude song below, students may be asked to demonstrate proficiency in scales. The most common scales used in jazz bands include the major, dorian (major with a flatted 3rd and 7th), and mixolydian (major with a flatted 7th) scales, and students should be familiar with them.
Auditions Update: Posted April 27th
